Himara has fabulous beaches. There are three in the large bay itself – shingle to the south, sandy in the village – and many miles of pristine empty beaches to either side. The village itself has some dozen restaurants and tavernas in season (expect cuisine similar to Greece), a handful of cafés and small shops, a bank and even an ATM (accepts Visa).

High on the hill 3 kms from the modern village is Old Himara. Few inhabitants remain now but it’s worth a visit for the painted Byzantine chapel of Shen Maria, the crumbling atmospheric houses and spectacular views.

Himara can be visited as a ‘stand-alone’ six night holiday (plus one night in Corfu); as part of a two-centre with Corfu or Paxos; as part of our tour (the last two nights are booked here); or as an extension following the tour (weekly add-on prices from c £170 pp).

Whichever you choose, please bear in mind that Albania is new to tourism. You will find the local people very friendly but curious! Not much English is spoken, although Greek and Italian are widely understood. Service is willing and with a smile, but can be slow. Misunderstandings will occur but go with an open mind and a pioneering spirit of friendly adventure and we are sure you will have a holiday to remember for years to come.

As the area is not organised for tourism – there is no car hire or viable local bus network – we have included the following local trips with transportation and guide:

• The old village of Himara (1-2 hrs)
• The thriving port of Vlora with its turbulent history dating back to 6BC (full day)
• The mountain village of Piluri, known for its traditional polyphonic music and panoramic views (half-day – incl raki with meze titbits!
• Ancient Butrint followed by lunch (included) in the castle above Saranda and a trip to the Blue Eye spring before your late afternoon ferry back to Corfu.
